NTPC Terminates GR Infraprojects’ ₹413 Crore Contract for 400 MWh BESS Project in Maharashtra

National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) has terminated the contract awarded to GR Infraprojects Ltd for a 400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Mouda Super Thermal Power Station in Maharashtra.
The contract, valued at ₹413.37 crore, was awarded to GR Infraprojects in March 2026. According to NTPC, the contractor failed to fulfil its contractual obligations and achieve the required progress on the project.
The BESS project was scheduled to be completed within 15 months. However, NTPC said that critical project activities experienced significant delays, affecting the progress of the development.
NTPC had previously issued a notice to GR Infraprojects directing the company to take immediate corrective measures to address the delays. However, the power utility stated that the required remedial actions were not undertaken.
Following the termination, NTPC has encashed securities worth approximately ₹91 crore available under the contract. The company said the action was taken in accordance with the applicable contractual provisions.
The Mouda BESS project is intended to support the integration of renewable energy into the power system. The project forms part of NTPC’s broader efforts to deploy battery energy storage alongside its conventional generation assets and strengthen flexibility in power system operations.
NTPC has now initiated the process of re-tendering the project at the risk and cost of GR Infraprojects. The company said it is taking steps to facilitate an early re-award and ensure timely completion of the BESS project.
The termination comes amid a separate contractual development between the two companies. On September 16, GR Infraprojects said it had issued a termination notice to NTPC, citing continuing force majeure and war-risk circumstances, along with contractual issues.
Meanwhile, NTPC shares declined 1.81% on Friday to close at ₹323.65, compared with ₹329.60 in the previous trading session.
